2012 Movies

I'm excited about upcoming movies for 2012 --- hopefully it's a better year than 2011. Thought I'd share a list of some good ones (in my opinion) to look forward to:

Dr. Seuss's The Lorax (March 2)

"The animated adventure follows the journey of a 12-year-old as he searches for the one thing that will enable him to win the affection of the girl of his dreams. To find it he must discover the story of the Lorax, the grumpy yet charming creature who fights to protect his world."

Zac Efron provides one of the voices for this movie. I'm sold.

The Hunger Games (March 23)

"Set in a future where the Capitol selects a boy and girl from the twelve districts to fight to the death on live television, Katniss Everdeen volunteers to take her younger sister's place for the latest match."

I just finished re-reading this book. I can understand why there's a craze with this series. I'm sure it will be a big opening weekend. I think they did well to case the actors a little older than the book characters -- that will help with some of the more gruesome aspects. What am I saying? The whole book is gruesome from *every* aspect. Except for Peeta. Him I will take home with me.

The Avengers (May 4)

"The Avengers will bring together the super hero team of Marvel Comics characters for the first time ever, including Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, The Hulk and more, as they are forced to band together to battle the biggest foe they’ve ever faced."

I've enjoyed the individual Marvel Comic movies that have come out recently, so it will be cool to see this all come together. I'm not that excited on Loki being the main bad buy, but just because I feel like he's whiny and the Thor world is weird. But maybe it will be awesome.

Snow White and the Huntsman (June 1)

"Snow White, a princess, escapes her evil stepmother with the help of a huntsman who was supposed to kill her but instead trains the princess to fight back."

Charlize Theron as the evil queen, Kristen Stewert as an armor-clad Snow White, and Chris Hemmsworth (also known as Thor) as the Huntsman. The preview looks awesome, but maybe that's because, as a friend pointed out, Kristen Stewart doesn't have any dialogue in it. Anyway, I'll go see this and maybe it will make me not despise Snow White. What's interesting is there's another Snow White movie coming out in March, with Julia Roberts -- called "Mirror, Mirror." This one also has Sean Bean in it, which alone makes it worth considering.

Prometheus (June 8)

"A team of explorers discover a clue to the origins of mankind on Earth, leading
them on a journey to the darkest corners of the universe. There, they must fight
a terrifying battle to save the future of the human race."

A Ridley Scott-directed "Alien prequel," though apparently they aren't calling it that. I have a feeling this people may totally hate this, but i'm intrigued.

The Amazing Spider-Man (July 3)

"Teenager Peter Parker grapples with both human problems and amazing super-human crises."

I can't say no to Peter Parker. And Emma Stone and Martin Sheen are both in it. Nice.

The Dark Knight Rises (July 20)

"Eight years after the events of The Dark Knight, the terrorist leader Bane arrives in Gotham City, pushing it and its police force to their limits, forcing
its former hero Batman to resurface after taking the fall for Harvey Dent's
crimes."

If the trend continues, this is going to be a really good movie. I wonder if they can out-do the last one (with The Joker) using Bane as the villian? I have to say I'm not at all excited about Anne Hathaway as Catwoman, but these days I'm not excited about Anne Hathaway as anything. I also love how Christopher Nolan seems to reuse his cast members a lot -- in this film is Tom Hardy (Inception), Joseph Gordon-Levitt (Inception), Michael Caine (Inception, The Prestige), and Marion Cotillard (Inception).

The Bourne Legacy (August 3)

"A story centered on a new CIA operative in the universe based on Robert Ludlum's novels."

So it's not a sequal and Jason Bourne isn't even it it. Jeremy Renner is the lead role, and after the latest Mission Impossible movie, I'm convinced there's much more to Jeremy Renner than "The Hurt Locker" let on. He was also really awesome in "The Town," and will be playing Hawkeye in "The Avengers" movie. Hollywood has officially convinced me that he's awesome.

Skyfall (November 9)

"Bond's loyalty to M is tested as her past comes back to haunt her. As MI6 comes under attack, 007 must track down and destroy the threat, no matter how personal the cost."

ANOTHER 007 MOVIE!!!!!! Nothing more need be said.

The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part II (November 16)

"After the birth of Renesmee, the Cullens gather other vampire clans in order to protect the child from a false allegation that puts the family in front of the Volturi."

I can't deny I'm pretty excited for this trainwreck of a final story plot to come to a close. You can't complain about the movie, though because it's pretty much exactly what Stephanie Meyer wrote. I have no explanation as to why I'm totally going to see this opening weekend.

Lincoln (December TBA)

"The sixteenth President of the United States guides the North to victory during the Civil War. DreamWorks has announced that the film 'will focus on the political collision of Lincoln and the powerful men of his cabinet on the road to abolition and the end of the Civil War.'"

No clue what this movie will end up being but all you have to do is look at the subject matter, the directer (Steven SoderbergSpielberg), and the cast (Daniel Day-Lewis--yes, please ... Joseph Gordon-Levitt--YES, please). Apparently it's all in the double last name! Daniel Day Lewis is Abraham Lincoln, Sally Field is Mary Todd Lincoln, and Joseph Gordon-Levitt is his son, Robert Todd Lincoln.

Les Miserables (December 7)

"A film adaptation of the popular stage play, which chronicles the lives of five characters through nearly two decades in France. Ex-con Jean Valjean tries to outrun his relentless pursuer Javert."

A MUSICAL adaptation for film!!!! Tom Hooper (The King's Speech, Elizabeth I) is directing. It's British. It's staring Hugh Jackman, Russell Crowe, Anne Hathaway. I rescind my previous comment about Anne Hathaway. She'll be a good Fatine. And Russell freaking Crowe as Inspecter Javert!? Wot. Can't wait to see him sing. I think it's rumored that Taylor Swift is Eponine, which is a travesty but I'll endure it.

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey (December 14)

"Bilbo Baggins, a Hobbit, journeys to the Lonely Mountain accompanied by a group of dwarves to reclaim a treasure taken from them by the dragon Smaug."

I mean, this won't beat the LOTR Trilogy, because you can't out-do Aragorn with a group of dwarves. But, I'm glad Peter Jackson got on this project and I'm sure it will be so good! Maybe Martin Freeman will help me not hate Bilbo so much ((I can only say I hate Bilbo, by the way, out of undying love for the books I've read like 20 times)).

The Great Gatsby (December 25)

"Based on the F. Scott Fitzgerald novel that takes place in Long Island and New York City in the summer of 1922."

Freaking love this! It will be directed by Baz Luhrmann, and will star Leonardo DiCaprio as Jay Gatsby, Carey Mulligan as Daisy Buchanan, and Tobey Maguire as Nick Carraway. Yeah you read that right: Leo as Gatsby. I think they made good casting choices, since you're competing with Robert Redford and Mia Farrow in most people's minds. Carey Mulligan is so good as well!

So --- looks like a good year! I'm pumped.

There may be a few more out there that will intrigue me as the come along. They're remaking Total Recall, staring Collin Farrel, and there's going to be a MIB:3 movie which I'm hoping (dear Lord) includes a Will Smith music video featuring one of his amazingly more-talented-than-you-because-they're-scientologists children. Overall it seems that the theme of remakes and sequels abounds!! More Batman, Spiderman, Bond, Avengers, Bourne, Ghost Rider, G.I. Joe, Underworld, and Twilight. Also, apparently we love going to the theater to watch super-human people do super-human things.

I considered responding to this post here. But instead I will write an un-asked-for companion piece on my own blog.

Umm. Right. So I've read both posts. And I second your comment on his description of BD.

But here's the thing: I think the preview makes it clear that The Hobbit is really going for "prequel" status rather than the somewhat frivolous story that Tolkien actually wrote. :)

ABG-- I agree about The Hobbit... but from a marketing standpoint what choice do they have, really, since the LOTR series was made first? They have to say in the preview: "remember that Gandalf guy in that movie that won best picture awhile ago? ... you know you want more of that!"
